Fertility-Supporting Harissa Sardine Pate
Oily fish are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory, support brain health, skin and egg and sperm health. Some people struggle with getting these in the diet and if you’re one of those people (or even if you aren’t!), give this recipe a go. The harissa paste makes it so tasty and moreish and you can enjoy it as part of a breakfast, lunch or blood sugar friendly snack. The addition of tomato puree adds another fertility supporting bonus, as a source of lycopene - a compound that supports sperm. Above, I enjoyed it on some fresh rye bread with a fried egg, some watercress (also a fertility powerhouse), sauerkraut, extra virgin olive oil and chilli flakes.
Serves 2-4 (depending on size of bread)
Topping ideas:
Ingredients:
Watercress
Live sauerkraut / kimchi
Salad/ crudites
Eggs - however you like them
Seeds
1 tin of sardines, in olive oil (or water)
1 tbsp of the sardine olive oil (or add a tbsp of oil, if in water)
1 tbsp harissa paste (I use Moulins Mahjoub as it’s made with olive oil rather than seed oils)
1 tbsp tomato puree
A good pinch of sea salt
1 handful chopped parsley
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
Method:
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mash together
Taste and add more salt / harissa paste to your liking
